For my midterm project, I plan on providing an in-depth analysis of the New York Times website (www.nytimes.com). This particular digital text is of interest to me since online news sources appear to be significantly changing the structure of the mass-media news sources. I plan to examine this online news website in terms of how it offers a much more personalized and interactive experience than a printed newspaper.

For my website, I have decided to analyze the phenomena of YouTube as a new source of media. Popularity (number of hits per video) seems to be the fundamental organizing structure of corperate YouTube, catering to the "lowest common denominator" because of it's capatalistic incentives. Is it possible for YouTube to function as an intellectual/academic medium of new media? Will the structure of YouTube break away from it's roots of measuring success through numbers i.e. number of users and number of hits that in return rake in money?

When the iPhone hit shelves it was undoubtedly the thing to have, creating a much anticipated craze. The features of the phone are very compelling, but more interesting than the actual phone itself, is the iPhone section of the apple store website. I'm looking to analyze the phone, as represented on the website, and the ways in which apple caters to the perceived desires of the consumer. What is it about the iPhone that makes it popular?

For my mid term project I would like to create a blog with a number of different posts that together will constitute the paper. The subject under study will be the theory of nonlinear text and how it works in new media. I plan on using both video and text based pages exploring the critical aspects of hypertext and the possibilities it opens through such materials as Ivanhoe, Joyce's Afternoon, Borges's the Garden of Forking Paths. Hopefully I want to make my project to show the indefiniteness of ideas presented by this media.

I intend to study the website Spokeo.com that was recently brought up in a Newsweek article describing the new technology. Spokeo is a service that consolidates information from social networking sites like facebook, myspace, youtube, Flickr, etc. onto a single page, using email addresses as references to find information.

For my midterm, I'd like to analyze a Japanese social networking site, http://www.mixi.jp

I am interested in the differences in culture affecting how the website works, and what kind of similarities in structures exist with sites like myspace or facebook. It's interesting, coming from Japan, because most Japanese students made a facebook after coming to college and keep up with their mixi websites as well.

I have decided to analyze the website eharmony.com. I have never used this website or any other dating/relationship website before, but thought that it would be interesting to analyze a site like this. Mainly, I feel that because of the purpose of the site matching and bringing people together that the site itself should be inviting and have perks that compel members to continue using eharmony.com. At this point, my focus is going to be on the information that is presented on eharmony.com's site that is made to inform and compel a new comer to join.

For my midterm project I would like to examine how iTunes media and the iTunes interface is paving its own path of how new media should behave and compare it to some other more traditional new media services such as netflix and rhapsody. First, the limited assortment yet high appeal of movies on the music store seem to be boosting the sales of the blockbuster type movie instead of creating a long tail effect like netflix does. Also, the highly publicized "top ten" list on iTunes further draw people to purchase more mainstream music and movie titles.

I am interested in the increasing popularity of multimedia applications such as Facebook on cell phones. For my midterm project, I would like to look at the Facebook application on Blackberry smartphones. This application is separate from the browser and was created specifically for use on cell phones. It is accessible and user-friendly. Facebook, a widely-used online social networking site, connects people together. It is an easy way to stay in touch with old friends. Now it is adapted for use by people on-the-go.
